SMH Consultants

Utilizing virtual reality to grow real-life leads

Project Overview

SMH, a civil engineering and land surveying firm based in Manhattan, Kansas, was facing a unique recruiting challenge. They had access to a large pool of highly qualified candidates from Kansas State University, but they competed against firms in larger metropolitan areas like Kansas City, Denver, and Dallas. SMH needed an unconventional way to grab students’ attention at career fairs and other recruiting events. Making important decisions about where to live and work is stressful for anyone, especially young adults, so our solution gave students the opportunity to imagine life at SMH before having to commit.

The “See Yourself at SMH” booth invited users to scan a QR code on their phone that opened up 360° video of the SMH office and various job sites. Students were given VR goggles to place their phone in, giving them an immersive experience with full control to turn left and right and look up and down. Their actions in real life were mimicked in the video so they could choose how to watch. This uncommon approach to career fairs not only gave SMH the lead generation they needed, but left an impression of the brand in their audience’s mind that other firms from large metro areas did not.
